Sympathy Begins with Listening

“Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down.” (Romans 12:15a MSG)

In order for us to love our neighbors, we must sympathize with their pain. The Bible says, “When [the Samaritan] saw the man’s condition, his heart went out to him” (Luke 10:33a MSG).

If sensitivity begins with your eyes, then sympathy begins with your ears. Learning to listen is the secret of genuine sympathy. The better listener you become, the more sympathetic you become.

The Bible says, “Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down” (Romans 12:15a MSG). In other words, we’re to enter into their emotions and feel what they feel.

How do we do that?

Start by listening. I don’t mean giving advice and trying to offer solutions. I mean just listen. Sympathetic listening meets two of our basic needs: the need to be understood and the need to have our feelings validated.

The Bible says it like this: “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2 NLT). What is the law of Christ? It’s called the Great Commandment: “Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Do you like sympathy? Of course you do. Do you like people to sympathize with you when you’re hurting emotionally or physically? Of course you do.

Jesus says do the same to others.

FROM THE DESK OF PASTOR AL

My first month at Emmanuel Community has been really great. First off I want to thank everyone who came and helped Diana and I move into our apartment on October 29th. Many hands made for light work and I want to thank Jim Nelson for assembling the crew that met us at the apartment and to help unload the truck. Then Diana and I were so surprised when the ladies brought out the lunch that was used to feed all the kind souls of the moving party. We are so appreciative of that warm, welcoming and loving gesture. This act is what being a Christian is all about. Reaching out to help in any way possible.

Next I must thank Reverend John Carter for all his help in acclimating me to the routine and what needs to be done to keep Emmanuel Community Church running as smoothly as John had it during the Interim period. John has assembled two notebooks showing what must be done and how to do it. They are a great help and believe me, I have referred to them constantly as I begin to serve all of you here. As part of that task, John arranged for me to meet Father Nyambo of All Saints Catholic church and the Rabbi Klein of the Ahavat Shalom Temple. John and I also took a toad trip to Lakeland to meet with Reverend Gene Eaton of The American Baptist Church of Lakeland and Reverend Joseph Ferreira the ABCOTS Ambassador to Area IV. John has done much to help me get my feet on the ground here and I am so grateful to him. John showed amazing patience as we went through the various steps on what the church office does. I am not the most computer literate person you will ever meet and sometimes I can get things really messed up. But John was an excellent teacher and I have a basic handle on what needs to be done and so I hope I can prove that to you as we go forward.

Just a thought on the first three sermons I preached here. These sermons are my vision of what a Christian should be. We should all be Salt and Light to the world because Jesus loves us and we should reach out to those around us in that same love. I am looking forward to getting more involved in the Community so I can represent Emmanuel in a variety of functions. If anyone sees a place on a committee or group that you think would be a good fit for me, please let me know so I can check into it and begin to serve. I will see you in church!

JUST FOR FUN!

This is a cute story I thought I would share with you.

To commemorate her birthday , actress/vocalist, Julie Andrews made a special appearance at Manhattan’s Radio City Music Hall for the benefit of the AARP.

One of the musical numbers she performed was ‘My Favourite Things from the legendary movie ‘Sound Of Music. Here are the lyrics she used : -

(We all know the song so sing it in your head as you read it, or sing it out loud!) – If you do sing it, its especially hysterical!!!

Botox and nose drops and needles for knitting,

Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,

Bundles of magazines tied up in string,

These are a few of my favourite things.

Cadillac’s and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,

Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,

Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,

These are a few of my favourite things.

When the pipes leak, When the bones creak,

When the knees go bad,

I simply remember my favourite things,

And then I don’t feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions,

No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,

Bathrobes and heating pads and hot meals they bring,

These are a few of my favourite things…

Back pain, confused brains and no need for sinnin’,

Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’,

And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames,

When we remember our favourite things.

When the joints ache, When the hips break,

When the eyes grow dim,

Then I remember the great life I’ve had,

And then I don’t feel so bad.

(Ms. Andrews received a standing ovation from the crowd that lasted over four minutes and the crowd cheered for repeated encores.)

MISSION AND OUTREACH

Dear Emmanuel Members and Friends.

CHURCH GROWTH TASK FORCE

Greetings Emmanuel Members and Friends!

As you know, the Church Growth Task Force focused their November 14th meeting on developing a mission statement for the church. The result is we have developed a statement that we will present to the Board of Deacons at the December meeting. After their approval the statement will be presented to the congregation for their consideration with a vote for adoption planned for the Annual Meeting in January.

We thank those of you who submitted suggestions and ask that you pray with us for the words of the proposed statement to come to life and fruition over the next year.

Our next meeting will occur at 5:30 Monday December 12 in the church sanctuary. Our goal and our hope is to develop a Vision Statement that reflects the ideas and input of all church members at that meeting

If you are unable to attend the next Church Growth Task Force meeting, we desire your prays and suggestions as well. Please submit any ideas or suggestions you have to Pastor John at jcarter310@tampabay.rr.com, or Sheila-Cann Poling at myattitude1@msn.com, or Pastor Allan at abendert50@gmail.com. Also, please remember that your presence at our meetings is desired and encouraged as it will enrich our working process. Please consider joining us at the meeting on December 12th.

Dick Spong has contracted for extensive tree trimming on our grounds. This will be done in early December. This project will be for cutting and removal of the branches hanging down on our buildings.

On December 1, Jim Nelson, Hugh Palmer, and Dick Spong will attend a zoning meeting with two representatives from Eckerd College. The purposeof this meeting is to request a change of zoning ordinance for Eckerd College to allow them to erect a third sign for the college. This sign will be added to the property.

When your nonchurch friends ask you why do you go to church, just tell them the following: Statistics don’t lie! 1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are

responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.
2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents

occur in the home.

3. Avoid walking on the streets or sidewalks because

14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.

4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of

all accidents involve these forms of transportation.

5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in

Hospitals. So, above all else, avoid hospitals!
But, you will be pleased to learn that only .001%

Therefore, logic tells us that the safest

Commence Prayer Malachi 3

It was in 1968 on an airplane headed for New York—a routine and normally very boring flight. But this time it proved to be otherwise. As the plane was on its descent pattern, the pilot realized that the landing gear was not engaging. Passengers were told to place their heads between their knees and grab their ankles just before impact. Then, with the landing only minutes away, the pilot suddenly announced over the intercom: “We are beginning our final descent. At this moment, in accordance with International Aviation Codes established at Geneva, it is my obligation to inform you that if you believe in God you should commence prayer.” Scout’s honor . . . that’s exactly what he said!

I’m happy to report that the belly landing occurred without a hitch. No one was injured and, aside from some rather extensive damage to the plane, the airline hardly remembered the incident. Amazing. The only thing that brought out into the open a deep down “secret rule” was crisis. Pushed to the brink, back to the wall, right up to the wire, all escape routes closed . . . only then does our society crack open a hint of recognition that God may be there and—”if you believe . . . you should commence prayer.”

There’s nothing like crisis to expose the otherwise hidden truth of the soul. Any soul. We may mask it, ignore it, pass it off with cool sophistication and intellectual denial . . . but take away the cushion of comfort, remove the shield of safety, interject the threat of death without the presence of people to take the panic out of the moment, and it’s fairly certain most in the ranks of humanity “commence prayer.”

Remember Alexander Solzhenitzyn’s admission? “It was only when I lay there on rotting prison straw that I sensed within myself the first stirrings of good. . . . So bless you, prison, for having been in my life.” Those words provide a perfect illustration of the psalmist’s instruction: “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word. . . . It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees” (Ps. 119:67, 71 NIV). After crisis comes, God steps in to comfort and teach. There’s nothing like crisis to expose the hidden truth of the soul.

A NOTE OF THANKS

FROM

REV & MRS. JOHN K. CARTER, JR.

Members and Friends of Emmanuel Community Church, American Baptist. Joycelyn and I would like to say “Thank You” for a wonderful experience as your interim pastor. Sixteen months have gone by very quickly and our ministry with you was truly a labor of love.

At every step and in every way, you have been supportive, encouraging, appreciative and loving. You made it easy for me to enjoy the ministry and work involved. Your sense of humor, willingness to take on responsibilities we could not, and overall commitment to Emmanuel Community Church was phenomenal. I still find myself amazed and thankful for the generosity, care and love that is shown among Emmanuel members and friends.

As I said at the beginning of the year, I know that God is blessing us and has plans for our spiritual growth and prosperity. As the prophet Jeremiah said, God’s plans are indeed for our good; to give us a future and a hope.

As Rev. Allan Bendert and Diana come to us, I know that you will be just as supportive of them as you were of me. Transition for the Bendert’s will not be easy and his responsibilities are awesome so permit them the time needed to “settle in”, get used to the climate and get the hang of the administrative side of ministry at Emmanuel. Also, continue to be prayerful for the Benderts.

Pray also for Cherry Hill Baptist Church. I imagine they are struggling to get their bearings much the same way we struggled to get our bearings when Rev. Norcross announced his retirement.

So again, let me say how much we appreciate all you’ve done to support me in my role as your interim pastor. Please know that we will continue active participation and membership here at Emmanuel and that if ever needed again, you can count on us.

John & Joycelyn Carter

A NOTE FROM

REV & MRS. ALLAN BENDERT

Diana and I are really looking forward to begin serving with you all on November 1. I am also really excited about beginning a small group program with you in January. I have looked at a number of different programs and I believe we should start with 40 Days In The Word. This program was developed by Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in California. This is how he describes it:

How many of us, when we are in conversations with our friends or just in a group, begin to doubt God’s Word, fall prey to others who attack its reliability or not live out its content? Too many of God’s people don’t know God’s Word, don’t really believe God’s Word or don’t ’do’ God’s Word. Forty Days in the Word will transform your people from ’hearers’ to ’doers.’”

Through individual studies, small group gatherings and services directed to enhance what we are learning, we will develop a deeper understand of the message God has for us in His Word, grow closer to God and develop a desire to share the Good News with those around us. I truly believe if we share together through this program we will begin to find the tool to help grow Emmanuel Community.

Diana and I will be moving in on the 29th of October and are really excited to be with you all again.

God has exciting plans for Emmanuel Community Church and I am so honored to be the pastor you have chosen to live out these plans.

I will see you in Church!

Allan & Diana Bendert

PASTORAL SEARCH COMMITTEE

What Did We Learn?

Over the past 15 months, what have we learned about ourselves as individuals and as a congregation? A time of transition can be a time of learning who and what we are about. One person observed that our church is not in the same place we were 15 months ago. That is what transition is all about. It means we have faced the changes and we have been changed. Scary isn’t it?

We’ve become pro-active in using our various gifts and talents for the benefit of the whole congregation. We’ve stepped up to the plate taking on responsibilities and developing the skills to do the job effectively. We’ve coped with our moments of sadness and celebrated our joys together. We continue growing in our spiritual vitality and developing greater depths in our prayer lives. It takes courage to step out in faith and trust the Spirit of our Lord to lead the way or to push us forward when needed. We have done all of this! Let us keep on doing what we have learned as we begin this new chapter in our congregational life with a new pastor.

“Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into you lap. For the measure you give, will be the measure you get back.” (Luke 6:38, RSV)

Thank you one and all for your prayerful support during this time.

Blessings Always,

Ruth M. W. Warren, D.Min., Chairperson, Pastoral Search Committee

CHURCH GROWTH TASK FORCE

For several months now, members of Emmanuel have met for one hour each month to investigate possible strategies and actions for increasing attendance and membership at Emmanuel.

Many great ideas have come forth and some have been implemented. Other ideas are being investigated and or considered. All have a focal point of reaching out to the community with greater intentionality and focus.

Presently, the task force is moving toward the development of a church mission and vision statement. We would very much like this to be a church wide effort involving as many members as possible. So, we ask that you join us at our next meeting scheduled for 5:30 Monday November 14 in the church sanctuary. Our goal and our hope is to develop a Mission and Vision Statement that reflects the ideas and input of all church members.

If you are unable to attend the next Church Growth Task Force meeting, we ask that you pray and submit your ideas and thoughts in writing to Pastor John or Sheila-Cann Poling. Either way, we greatly desire your participation in the development of the mission and vision statement and on the task force in general.

Also, please remember to pray specifically for us and with us at 11 a.m. each Saturday morning regarding the growth of our church. As you do, we feel it is a wonderful church with loving and friendly people who love the Lord and love to share God’s love with others.

John

MISSION & OUTREACH

The November mission is focused on collecting non- perishable food items and canned goods for the Religious Community Services (RCS) Thanksgiving Food Basket program. As usual, the holiday season creates great demand for grocery assistance in the local community. We invite Emmanuel Community Church, American Baptist members to bring canned goods and other non-perishable food items to church on Sunday’s and leave them in the assigned collection baskets or assigned tables. As always, your contributions are greatly appreciated and help Emmanuel Community Church to continue its active participation in this meaningful ministry.

INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING WORSHIP SERVICE

This year’s Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held on Monday, 21 November at 7 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church on Curlew Road. Please join us for this 24 year tradition as we worship and give thanks to God for the many blessings in our lives with our neighbors from Temple Ahavat Shalom and All Saints Catholic Church.

HOLIDAY ADOPT-A-FAMILY

The Program Ministry Team and ABWM are working together again this year to sponsor the “Adopt A Family” program from the Haven for Christmas. We have asked for a family with 2 or 3 children and will put specific requests on the giving tree in the foyer as soon as we receive the requested information. The gifts should be unwrapped giving the parents the joy of seeing and wrapping the gifts for their children. Monetary gifts and gift cards would also be appreciated as they allow parents to do the shopping for their children, especially for more expensive items. Gifts should be returned under the tree by Saturday December 10th

Gift Baskets for Shut-Ins

The ABWM will be assembling gift baskets for 12 of our shut- in members. See Linda DeMola or Robbie McIntosh if you wish to help. Baskets will be assembled and delivered on Wednesday December 14th.

PROGRAM & MINISTRY

“WE GIVE THANKS”

POTLUCK DINNER

Come join the fun as we enjoy fellowship and great food at the “We Give Thanks” Potluck dinner. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, 19 November in the Ministry Center. We’re anticipating a visit from our friends Bill & Ruth Marstaller from Maine and look forward to seeing them and catching up on all that’s going on with them. See you there.

PROPERTY & FINANCE

Dollars for the Driveway Parking Lot Project

On Monday, October 17, Emmanuel’s Board of Deacons reviewed the updated information of the parking lot improvements project. Phase 1, the initial stage will be to lay down a compact base for the whole parking lot area, including the parking spaces next to the Cell Phone Tower (the previous estimates provided did not include the cost of this area).

This will be a hard surface of distressed road materials that have been broken up into small pieces, and then compacted to form this base.

The base will provide us a strong and solid surface to then lay the finished paving on in Phase 2, when we have raised the additional funds needed to complete the project.

It is obvious that this project is very important to our congregation, and because of the generous donations received to date; we are able to pay the total cost of $18,004.18 for Phase 1 and will launch the project as soon as possible.

At a later date, when the compacted base has hardened and settled as planned, we will need to raise additional funds to complete Phase 2, which is the application of the finished paving product. Phase 2 estimated at current costs will be an additional $11,832.48.

Thank you to all who have contributed to this project so far and we welcome any additional contributions.

INTERNATIONAL CHORALE CONCERT

Save the date of Sunday December 4 at 3 p.m for a wonderful holiday season concert by the renowned International Chorale of Dunedin. The concert will be held in the sanctuary. Get into the spirit of the holidays with great music and humor. Donations will be requested and will go to the support the Pinellas Hope Soup Kitchen.

CHURCH DECORATING

FOR CHRISTMAS

Come join the fun as we decorate the church sanctuary for Christmas on Friday, 2 December at 5 p.m. Pizza and soft drinks (maybe egg nog) will be available after the work is done to help get you in the holiday spirit.

2012 CHURCH BUDGET

In November you will receive the church’s annual financial support pledge letter, pledge card and a copy of the preliminary budget for 2012. Income and expenses on the preliminary budget will be estimated based on the 2011 budget pledges, known financial obligations and planned expenses for special projects. We will then revise the budget to be presented at the January annual business meeting. We respectfully request that financial support pledge cards be returned to Linda DeMola or mail it to the church on or before December 1, 2011. Thank You in advance for helping us with this important project

MUSIC MINISTRY

As the holiday season quickly approaches, the choir will be working on wonderful pieces of music to celebrate the Advent and the birth of our Savior. Please consider lending your voice to the choir for this special season. As always, rehearsals are at 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings in the sanctuary.

JUST FOR LAUGHS

A couple was touring the Capitol in Washington and the guide pointed to a tall benevolent gentleman as the congressional chaplain. The lady asked, “What does the chaplain do? Does he pray for the Senate or House?” The guide answered, “No, he gets up, looks at the congress, then prays for the country!”

Take Courage “He shall not be afraid of evil tidings.” Psalm 112:7

As Christians, we are encouraged not to be distressed by the arrival of difficult challenges because if we are distressed by them, we are not much different from those who do not know our God. Those who do not walk with God and have never proved his faithfulness as we have, have reason to fear and there is no wonder they bow down with alarm under difficult circumstances.

But we have been begotten again unto a lively hope, and our hearts live and are focused on the blessing and power of God. If we are distracted by challenging times as others are, what is the value of that grace which we know that we have in Christ Jesus? Where is the dignity of the new nature we have?

If we should be as alarmed as others are, we open the door to the temptation of sins that are common to others under trying circumstances. When those who do not know God encounter trying circumstances, they are often overtaken by evil things and often rebel against God. Some murmur and think that God deals with them unfairly or harshly. Should we who know God to be faithful be guilty of the same sin?

Moreover, those who do not know God or His son Christ Jesus often run to wrong means of escape from difficulties. If we permit our minds to yield to fear during challenging circumstances, we may find ourselves tempted to do the same.

As always, our trust must be in the Lord as we wait patiently for our Lord to bring change to our times of challenge. Our wisest course is to do as Moses did at the Red Sea, “Stand still and see the salvation of God.” If we give way to fear when we hear of evil tidings, we will be unable to meet the trouble with that calm that prepares us for a greater testimony from the test we are bearing.

So, glorify God with faith and courage in the time of trial. Saints have often sung God’s high praises in the fire. Take courage, and confidently rely on the faithfulness of our covenant God, “let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

EMMANUEL COMMUNITY CHURCH, AMERICAN BAPTIST CALLS NEW PASTOR

After months of prayer, thorough searches, interviews of available American Baptist Church clergy, and an intensive candidate weekend, Emmanuel has extended a call to the Rev. Allan E. Bendert to become the church’s second full time pastor.

Rev. Bendert became the front runner of several candidates over the course of several written exchanges and interviews with the pastoral search committee. He was recommended to the congregation in August. Rev. Bendert is presently the pastor of the Cherry Hill Baptist Church of Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

During an intensive candidate weekend taking place from 16 September through 18 September, Rev Bendert and his wife Diana met with the congregation for interviews and social events. The Bendert’s impressed all with an easy going presence, and passion to serve God and God’s people. Rev. Bendert also delivered a powerful sermon on God’s Gift of Grace during the Sunday morning worship service.

Rev. Bendert will move to the area in late October to assume duties as pastor of Emmanuel Community Church, on the first Sunday of November.

A NOTE FROM REV. ALLAN BENDERT

Diana and I would like to thank all of you for the kind hospitality shown during the candidate weekend. We are really excited about coming to serve with you and getting to know all of you better. I received the following in an email last week and thought that you might appreciate it like I did. It is called Jesus Loves Me for Seniors. Here for you now is a senior version of Jesus Loves Me”:

JESUS LOVES ME
Jesus loves me, this I know,
Though my hair is white as snow
Though my sight is growing dim,
Still He bids me trust in Him.
(CHORUS)
YES, JESUS LOVES ME; YES, JESUS LOVES ME.
YES, JESUS LOVES ME; FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO.
Though my steps are oh, so slow,
With my hand in His I’ll go
On through life, let come what may,
He’ll be there to lead the way.
(CHORUS)
When the nights are dark and long,
In my heart He puts a song.
Telling me in words so clear,
“Have no fear, for I am near.”
(CHORUS)
When my work on earth is done,
And life’s victories have been won.
He will take me home above,
Then I’ll understand His love.
(CHORUS)
I love Jesus, does He know?
Have I ever told Him so?
Jesus loves to hear me say,
That I love Him every day.
(CHORUS)

I think this pretty much sums up how much Jesus loves us! Maybe we can sing it some Sunday. I will see you in church on November 6th!
Pastor Allan

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO LINDA DEMOLA

The Emmanuel family owes a special debt of gratitude to Linda DeMola for taking the lead in the remodeling of our memorial garden. With imagination and perseverance she and a team of helpers have given us a “work of art” and a place to reflect on the blessings of God that have come to us through family and friends who are now home with the Lord. Please say “Thank You” to Linda and other members who worked tirelessly to create such a beautiful garden as part of the church property.

PROPERTY & FINANCE

On Monday, 19 September, Emmanuel’s Board of Deacons gave the property and finance team the “go ahead” for the start of the parking lot improvements. The best of the three estimates we have received to do the work comes to a total cost of $16,720. 00. Through the generosity of members and friends of Emmanuel, we have received designated donations of $8000 toward that project. In June, the congregation approved the spending of $6000 dollars toward the project. Doing the math, that leaves a short-fall of $2720.00. So, we are asking members and friends of Emmanuel to help us overcome that $2720.00 short-fall through what we’d like to call “Dollars for the Driveway.” Any contribution; no matter the amount toward the completion of this project, would be greatly appreciated. Please consider giving by writing a check to Emmanuel and designating on the check “Dollars for the Driveway”. Cash may be placed in a church envelope with the words “Dollars for the Driveway” written on the outside.

Thanks.

MEMORIAL GARDEN

I hope you are all enjoying the recent improvements made in the Memorial Garden. In mid June the stamped concrete pad was made possible by a donation from the estate of the late Ethel Rapp. A special thank you also goes to John and Jane Couture who made a generous donation which was used to purchase irrigation supplies and plants for the landscaping. I want to thank my husband Chuck for installing the irrigation and helping to put in the plants. Also, thanks to Jon Poling for obtaining and planting the ground cover that beautifies the area in front of the concrete pad.

SPECIAL REQUEST FOR PRAYER

The members of Emmanuel Community Church wish to thank the Program Ministry Team, the Pastor Search Committee and every person involved in the planning and execution of our Pastor Candidate Weekend. At the risk of failing to name some one, we want to thank Jim Nelson and Jane Coatney for taking charge of the Saturday morning events. Also, special thanks to Dick Spong and many others for working to set up and break down tables for Saturday night “Get Acquainted Bingo” with the Benderts.

A special thanks should also go to Linda DeMola and Mary Smith for the decorating the large classroom for the Saturday evening event and to Starks, Jane Couture and Glenna Teets for making the food choices. We also thank Betsy Starks for leading us in “Get Acquainted Bingo”, and Jane Coatney and Glenna Teets for providing wonderful prizes.

JUST FOR LAUGHS

A nervous young minister, new to the church, told his parishioners, “For my text today, I will take the

words, ‘And they fed five men with five thousand loaves of bread and two thousand fishes.”

An old deacon of the church (Mr. Perkins) snickered at the preacher’s snafu, raised his hand and said:

“That’s not much of a trick. I could do that.”

The minister did not respond. However, the next Sunday he decided to repeat the text. This time he did

it properly saying: And they fed five thousand men with five loaves of bread and two fishes.”

Smiling, the minister said: “Could you do that, Mr. Perkins?”

Mr. Perkins replied, “Sure I could.”

“How would you do that asked the young pastor?”

“With all the food I had left over from last Sunday!” replied Deacon Perkins.
